HAPPY HALLOWEEN
October 31, 2011
Halloween is traditionally the stuff of nightmares… and for us, it really was. We conducted a rescue from a battery hen farm on Halloween day, and what we saw was horrific. Take a look at this photo. At first glance, would you even recognise this as a hen? Believe it or not, she was far from the worst. And don’t be fooled: colony cages will be no better than battery cages. They’re just battery cages with “a bit of lipstick” to dress them up. My dream is that everyone who wants eggs keeps their own pet hens in their backyard, lovingly cared for without cruelty. Then we wouldn’t need intensive factory farms that truly are a living nightmares for millions of suffering creatures. For the hens that came with us yesterday to start their new life of rehabilitation and eventual re-homing, it really did become a “Happy Halloween”. For all the others, the horror continues.
