Infant Tuis
January 12, 2011
As you can see from this photo, tuis are all mouth when they’re babies!! These 2 were in a nest that fell. The kind-hearted man who found them put the nest into an icecream container and secured it back in the tree. He watched for parents to come, and when they didn’t he climbed a ladder regularly to feed them. However, when one died and a second seemed to be getting weaker, he decided it was time to bring them to The Sanctuary.
It’s been a busy week with a wide variety of birds coming in. We’ve received tiny birds like these tuis and a welcome swallow through to larger birds like a starving penguin, a petrol who had swallowed a fishing hook, an albatross (which was actually a black-backed gull, but we didn’t have the heart to tell the people who rescued him!) and the hawk below who’d been hit by a car. At least it’s never boring!!
