Ostrich & Emu

April 26, 2011

Among the 30 battery hens we received in the last rescue, there were 2 hens who were particularly weak and unwell. The others instinctively singled them out for abuse, and we had to remove them from the rehab barns to keep them safe. They had no feathers at all on their back and necks, and looked quite comical when they stuck their heads up. We named them Ostrich and Emu, and created a special habitat just for them. To our surprise, Ostrich and Emu have thrived. 5 weeks later they are now strong and confident, have new feathers coming through, and have become extremely affectionate toward people. If no-one is outside, they come peer through the garage door and peck on the glass, looking for company – as you can see from this photo! We’re hoping to find a nice permanent home where Ostrich and Emu can go together to become someone’s permanent pets. If you’re interested, let us know.
