Pupay And Baybee

December 29, 2011

Our backyard is ruled by our female Paradise Shelduck, Baybee. Initially she didn’t take kindly to the new ‘intruder. She chased Pupay around, and he’d run behind our legs for protection like a little child. We had to conduct “supervised visits” many times a day, until Baybee gave up and accepted him. What a relief! (Females have the white head, and males the black.) This week Pupay started taking short trial flights, and a couple of days ago he suddenly flew up and over the house and away. We ran outside and looked for him for hours, but he was gone. I knew he would go eventually, but didn’t expect him to disappear permanently on his first flight. That evening I went out to check one last time before dark… and there was Pupay, waiting patiently at the gate! He walked back with me, chatting all the way about his great adventure. Pupay settled into the backyard, happy to be home again. We’re happy, too!!
