Rescue In The Bahamas

June 26, 2011

If you’re an animal lover, no matter where you are in the world (even on vacation!) you end up getting involved in animal rescues. On Friday night after dinner we noticed 2 tiny wild kittens. Both were perilously thin, and one had eyes that were severely crusted and opaque. All night we worried about how we could help them, how to catch them, whether we could find a vet on a Saturday, what we’d have to pay in US dollars, how to transport them without a car, etc etc. Yet we knew if we didn’t intervene, they would probably die, so we were determined to help. On Saturday morning I remembered an ad I’d seen for a Humane Society fundraiser, and phoned them. They were FANTASTIC!! They sent someone over right away with 2 humane ‘catch cages’. They assured us that if we could catch the kittens, they would provide medical treatment, and either find a new home or keep them in their new cattery. They confirmed they have a no-kill policy. Michael and I spent the whole day setting the traps, moving them, baiting them, checking them. At noon we captured 1 kitten. Reno from the Humane Society came to pick her up – but the sickest kitten still eluded us. (continued below)
