Sparky’s Progress

December 12, 2010

The good news is that Sparky has calmed down and become very affectionate. When we rescued him he’d never been handled and was quite wild and frightened. Now he nuzzles my face, licks my hand, and lets me pet him all over. He’s a lovely gentle soul.

The bad news is that his injured leg is actually looking worse, and he’s more lame now than before. After removing the putrid bandage, the vet wanted to give it several days to breathe so that granulation could begin to form over the massive raw wound. As it hardens up, it cracks and bleeds. Obviously that’s very painful, and Sparky is now trying not to bear weight on it at all. Pus is oozing from where the bone is poking through, and it looks horrible. The vet is coming tomorrow at 2pm, and will either operate or make a new treatment plan. I’m hoping we operate and get it over with, so Sparky can begin to heal properly. No matter what, we’ll see this sweet creature through. Hopefully before long he’ll be whole and well, and grazing peacefully in the sun with our other animals.
