Teeny Tiny Bunny
January 15, 2012
Yesterday while feeding the pigs, I was startled when something moved on the ground near their feet. It was a tiny bunny, so young that it’s eyes weren’t even open. I was terrified that it would be crushed by the pigs in their feeding frenzy, but miraculously they missed stepping on it. His stomach was sunken, and he was dehydrated. I’ve checked various websites, and they all say that it’s practically impossible to raise an orphaned baby rabbit. The mortality rate is extremely high. They need to eat the mother rabbits first pooh to get the right bacteria in their stomach, and of course I don’t have access to that. Overfeeding is a common cause of death, and you have to stimulate their genitals to make them pee regularly (the mother would do this by licking… I use a damp tissue!) It’s a challenge, but he is absolutely the cutest, sweetest, most cuddly baby I’ve seen, and I have to try. He’s still alive today – I hope he’ll make it!!
