The Spring Rush Has Begun
September 25, 2010
As happens every Spring, the baby birds have started to arrive. People are calling and delivering orphans, or nestlings their cats have brought in. For the first time ever, we received a spur-winged plover chick – and then a second one a few days later. Our favourite so far is this little paradise shelduck. They have such wonderful personalities, and bond quite quickly. This photo is of the baby taking a sunny nap with his new ‘mum’ (my husband Michael, who will probably have a fit when he sees this on the website!!) This is always a busy time at The Sanctuary, and we’re getting the nest boxes ready for the next species, which is usually the tuis.
