Tragic Day

December 13, 2011

Yesterday was a terrible day for us. Our darling female mallard Peg, who has been with us for 6 years, was killed by a hawk. Peg had been with us since she was a duckling. We had to amputate her leg, leaving a stump, which is why she was named Peg-Leg. Although mallards are promiscuous and don’t mate for life, Peg’s mate Gallahad has stayed with Peg for her entire adult life. It’s as if he knew she needed extra support. They made their home in our backyard, where Peg could be spoiled by us. Peg had 10 ducklings this year, and all have survived. Peg could have flown away when the hawk attacked her babies, but she stayed to defend them. Sadly, it cost her her life. The orphaned ducklings are safe, and we’re caring for them. I don’t hate the hawk, and I understand that it’s nature…. but I can’t help but feel sad every time I look out the window and realise afresh that Peg isn’t there any more.
