Where Do You Get The Mice??
January 9, 2011
Yes, that’s a mouse tail hanging out of the hawks mouth!! And those are tweezers I’m using to feed him, to keep my fingers from becoming part of the meal. Owls and hawks are predators, and need meat to survive. And they need the whole food (skin, bones, fur, etc) to stay healthy. Which means that we have the unpleasant job of serving mice to them on a daily basis while they’re rehabilitating with us. I’m often asked, “Where do get the mice?” The answer is: I get them already frozen. I couldn’t do it otherwise, as I could never kill any creature, or watch them suffer. But just remember: when you’re visiting and you see an ice cream container in our freezer…. it may not be ice cream!!
